These are Lila’s favorite toys in order of preference, and her comments about them:
- Basketball:
- I’ll do anything for the opportunity to chase a basketball! I suppose a Jolly Ball of similar size would be just about as good if you can find one without the handle. The handle gets in the way of rolling it where I want it to go.
- Ball on a Rope:
- Mine is called a Rhino-Tug, made by Nylabone. I like to grab the rope and shake the ball around until it gives up. Sometimes the ball hits things pretty hard, including my ribs and head. This doesn’t bother me at all. I like it. I do get startled when it knocks over a lamp or something. I’m pretty sure that means I have to shake it harder so it learns not to do that again. I also like to play tug, and chasing it when thrown is very, very fun.
The ball has nubs and crevasses that are supposed to keep my teeth clean, but I’m not allowed to chew on it much. They don’t like it that when left to my own devises I mostly just chew on the rope. Apparently it gets expensive or something.
- Rope:
- A plain rope with knots on the ends is almost as much fun as a ball on a rope. Four feet of 1” rope from the hardware store is just about perfect and costs only around a dollar. I like the soft synthetic kind. It doesn’t hurt my mouth or my dad’s hands when we play tug. I also like to chase it then run back and play tug for a bit. Dad says he’s going to spend a bit more and get some cotton rope next time though. He thinks it’s better for my stomach. I’m not allowed to chew on it anyway so what does it matter? Just ‘cause I got hold of it when no-one was looking that time… I only ate less than a foot of the stuff, and I threw that up later so what’s the harm?
[EDIT] I just got a 4 ft length of manilla rope. This is a bit rough on the hands but Lila doesn't like to eat it and has just as much fun playing with it. If she does eat it I don't have to worry about what eating sythetics will do toher system. - Squishy solid rubber ball:
- This is a great toy to play with in the house. Mostly I get mom and dad to throw it, then I lose it under the couch and they have to get it for me. I’m pretty happy just chewing it up though if no-one pays attention to me.
- Fabric Ring:
- This is pretty fun to play with because you can get your paws stuck in it and have something to pull against. Sometimes it gets stuck on my nose or my back leg or something and I have to figure out what’s happening which makes mom and dad laugh.
- Fluffy toys:
- I like to chew on these kinds of toys. It usually doesn’t take very long to pull the stuffing out. Sometimes someone else will try and get it away from me which is really fun. These are good toys when you don’t really care what you are playing with.
